Hail damage is rarely obvious from the ground, and waiting on it can cost you. Here are five signs every Houston homeowner should check after a storm.
Greater Houston gets real hail, and the damage it does to a roof is sneaky. From the driveway your roof can look completely fine while shingles up top have lost the protective layer that keeps water out. Left alone, that turns into leaks and a much bigger bill months later. Here is what to look for after a storm rolls through Houston.
1. Bruised or dented shingles
Hail knocks the granules off asphalt shingles and can leave a soft, dark bruise you can feel more than see. Those spots are where the shingle has started to fail. A few are worth watching. A roof full of them usually means the surface is compromised.
2. Granules collecting in your gutters
Those little sand-like granules are the shingle's sunscreen. After a hailstorm, check your gutters and the bottom of your downspouts. A pile of granules means hail has been grinding away at the surface, and bare spots are not far behind.
3. Dents on metal: vents, flashing, and gutters
Soft metal shows hail clearly. Look at roof vents, the flashing around your chimney, and the gutters themselves. If you see fresh dents in the metal, the shingles took the same hits. Metal is often the easiest proof that a storm was strong enough to cause real damage.
4. Cracked or missing shingles
High wind rides along with most hailstorms here. Cracked shingles, lifted edges, or gaps where a shingle used to be all let water straight under the roof. This is the kind of damage that turns into an interior leak fastest.
5. Stains on your ceilings or in the attic
If you already see a brown ring on a ceiling or daylight in the attic, water is getting in. By this stage a quick repair may not be enough, so it is worth getting eyes on it before the next storm makes it worse.
